Last week’s pick: JB Holmes at the Greenbrier Classic
Final Standing: MC
Summary: first time this year I have had MC’s back to back. If it hits three #neilerknows he’s going to be in the hot seat.
John Deere makes lawn mowers. And lawn mowers cut grass on golf courses. I get how this partnership is a thing but I find it so hilarious for some reason. It just doesn’t compare to the Honda Classics or the Waste Management Opens when it comes to sponsors that make you think of a top tier PGA Tour tournament.
I took a quick look at the players that have won this tournament in the last 10-ish years and it’s riddled with Americans. I mean, it makes sense. A tournament with the title sponsor of lawn mowers should be dominated by Americans. They love country music, tractors and pick up trucks. Why not lawn mowers too!
Random thought that sort of relates but if a golfer were to ever sing their own country song it would probably include lyrics like: (sung to the tune of Garth Brooks because that is the only country music singer I know)
“I grabbed my Deere and cut some greens! Ain’t satisfied til its rolling sweet. ”
“ And the John Deere mows…”
Let’s see if you can guess which Garth songs I was using to come up with those tasty lyrics.
I don’t like country music. I am quite comfortable saying I actually despise it. It’s always the same song about driving trucks, drinking whiskey, and driving trucks while drinking whiskey. And sadly this tournament’s story line is no different.
Steve Stricker won this thing 3 times in a row, Jordan Spieth 2 times in 3 years and there are always names like Zach Johnson and Ryan Moore lingering in the top 10. So if I’m smart I probably pick one of those players and take a solid top 20 finish into next week’s Open Championship. Back to back winner Bryson “The Scientist” DeChambeau?
But I think you guys have already gathered I am not the most intellectually gifted. Passionate, but could probably benefit from reading a few books.
My pick for the John Deere Classic will be David Lingmerth. I’ll be honest, life is taking up my ability to watch golf on the Sundays (I think it’s because I haven’t been hung-over on Sunday in a while) but I’ve noticed his name on a few leader boards recently and that has me convinced he’s in it to win it this week. And he’s Swedish so what’s not to like about that? IKEA, Abba, Oscar Klefbom. A country that just keeps on giving.
